Michael McDermott

Voice Faculty

Hello! I’m Michael, and I’m so excited to be part of the Houston Voice Studio faculty. I’m an international performer and voice teacher who works across classical, musical theater, pop, and rock styles. My goal is to help you build a voice that feels strong, healthy, and fully your own.

I first fell in love with music playing in rock bands, learning multiple instruments and performing live as often as I could. That early experience shaped my love of contemporary styles and gave me a deep appreciation for versatility, stage presence, and stylistic authenticity. Over time, I expanded into musical theater and classical performance, which gave me firsthand insight into the different technical demands each genre requires. Because of that background, I feel just as comfortable helping you refine a mix or belt as I do developing classical resonance and control.

Alongside teaching, I maintain an active international career as an opera singer. I have performed principal roles, concert solos, and appeared with companies and festivals across the United States, Europe, and South America, including Houston Grand Opera. I was a member of the Butler Studio at Houston Grand Opera and the Apprentice Program at The Santa Fe Opera, where I worked closely with world class conductors, directors, and coaches. These experiences continue to shape my artistry and deeply inform the way I teach.

In lessons, I focus on building healthy, sustainable technique that allows for freedom and ease. I care deeply about helping singers develop consistency, range, and vocal stamina without sacrificing authenticity. Whether you are preparing for auditions, performing live, or simply wanting to feel more confident in your voice, I’m here to help you build a technique that supports expressive, empowered singing.

I hold a Bachelor of Music from The Juilliard School and pursued graduate studies at Rice University. When I’m not performing or teaching, you can usually find me exploring new repertoire, collaborating with other musicians, or staying connected to the creative communities that first inspired my love of singing.
