Talon Broughton
Voice Faculty
Hello! My name is Talon, and I am thrilled to be part of the Houston Voice Studio faculty. I am a vocalist and educator with a background in classical performance, musical theater, contemporary commercial styles, and vocal pedagogy. My teaching style is warm, curiosity-driven, and rooted in helping singers understand how their instruments work so they can build confidence, flexibility, and artistic freedom.
I emphasize vocal health through flexibility and artistic freedom. My goal is to help singers expand their vocal abilities and develop as many tools as possible in their vocal toolbox. By strengthening coordination, building functional efficiency, and exploring a wide range of colors and textures, I help students develop a voice that is sustainable, versatile, and expressive. Whether a moment calls for clarity, power, warmth, edge, or nuance, I want singers to feel free to choose the sound that best serves their expression.
My teaching philosophy is shaped by my experience as both a performer and a coach. I believe learning to sing is a collaborative process, and I strive to create a lesson environment that feels supportive, focused, and empowering. I love working with singers of all ages and experience levels, and I tailor lessons to each student’s unique learning style. I value the study of voice not only as an artistic endeavor but as a discovery of the self. Because the voice is an instrument made of your own body, learning to sing means exploring art and yourself at the same time.
My journey into singing and performance began with my first voice lessons at age seven. That same year, I received my first professional contract to perform with the Houston Grand Opera Children’s Chorus, followed closely by a year-long tour of The Sound of Music across 11 cities in Asia. Singing has truly taken me places, and local, national, and international performance opportunities have given me the chance to study with many different voice teachers across a variety of genres. Each of those experiences has shaped how I understand the voice and how I teach.
I later completed my Bachelor of Arts in Music at Sam Houston State University, where I focused primarily on opera, art song, music theory, and Golden Age musical theater. More recently, you may have seen me perform with Stages Repertory Theatre as the Woodsman in Panto Hansel and Gretel, with the Three Texas Tenors in North Houston, or singing contemporary and classical music in church services around town. I have never limited myself to one style of singing, and I hope you will join me in exploring as many styles as bring you joy.
While I still love performing, coaching and teaching have taken the forefront lately. I continue to teach voice lessons and offer personal training as I finish my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Texas A&M University Victoria. I am also excited to have begun seeing clients in a therapeutic setting, which has only deepened what I already love about this work: helping people find themselves, achieve their goals, and realize they are capable of more than they imagined.
When I am not in a practice room, at the squat rack, or in the clinic, I am getting as lost as possible on a hiking trail, reading fantasy, watching anime, or spoiling my nephew!
