Angie Tovar
Voice Faculty
Hello! My name is Angie, and I’m so excited to be part of the Houston Voice Studio faculty! I’m a passionate and energetic voice teacher who believes that singing should be both technically grounded and joyful. My goal is to create a supportive, curiosity-driven space where singers feel confident exploring their voices, expanding their range, and discovering new things about themselves as artists. Whether you're just beginning your vocal journey or looking to deepen your technique and artistry, I’m excited to help you grow and cheer you on every step of the way.
My teaching philosophy is rooted in healthy vocal function, creative expression, and individualized learning. I work with singers of all ages and experience levels and tailor each lesson to their unique learning style, whether that’s visual, kinesthetic, or auditory. In lessons, I place a strong emphasis on functional voice technique and body awareness. I help singers understand the “why” behind their sound by breaking down the anatomy of the voice and mechanics of healthy singing, including efficient breath management, registration balance, resonance shaping, and articulation. My ultimate goal for my singers is to build stylistic versatility so they can sing freely and sustainably across genres.
I love helping vocalists prepare for auditions, performances, and personal milestones, and I always aim to make lessons dynamic, playful, and goal-oriented. Whether we’re working on a musical theater cut or diving into vocal improvisation, I strive to meet each singer where they are and help them grow into the artist they’re meant to be. I teach in both English and Spanish and love working with bilingual singers and families.
As a performer, I have experience in both classical and contemporary styles. While my formal training is rooted in opera, I have a deep love for musical theater, pop, and mariachi music. Some of my favorite stage roles include Vickey in Hobson’s Choice (Tom Cipullo), Le Rossignol/Le Feu/La Princesse in L’Enfant et les Sortilèges (Ravel), Chiffon in Little Shop of Horrors, and Urleen in Footloose, which I performed as part of a nine-show season with The College Light Opera Company. I also perform in mariachi ensembles and love incorporating my cultural heritage into my music-making. Outreach is close to my heart, and I work with the Houston Grand Opera’s community engagement programs to introduce children across Houston to opera and the power of storytelling through song.
I hold a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Houston, where I studied under Cynthia Clayton and collaborated with stage directors such as Kathleen Belcher, Lawrence Edelson, and Nicole Kenley-Miller. My studies also took me abroad to France and Italy, where I immersed myself in language and operatic performance.
Outside of teaching and performing, I enjoy studying languages, experimenting with hair and makeup, practicing martial arts, and diving into the worlds of video games, anime, and fantasy novels. I’m also the proud dog mom of three elderly, quirky chihuahuas. Ask me for pictures anytime!
